John D. Herbert Jr., 86, of RR 2, Towanda, Asylum Twp., Pa., passed away Sunday, Aug. 31, 2008 at the Bradford County Manor in West Burlington Twp., Pa.
Born Aug. 21, 1922 in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., he was the son of the late John D. Herbert Sr. and Frances Fritzsinger Herbert.
John was a veteran of WWII having served in the U.S. Army.
In earlier years John was employed by Rockwell Taxi, Beatty Ford in Towanda and the Ingersoll-Rand in Athens.
He was later employed by Coolbaugh Auto Sales in N. Towanda for many years until his retirement.
John was a member of the V.F.W. No 6072, Asylum Twp.
In earlier years, John volunteered as a Boy Scout leader, and police auxiliary for the VFW Raceway.
John enjoyed hunting, woodworking, traveling boating and working on cars.
Surviving are: his wife, Ruth M. Herbert at home; sons, David L. Herbert at home, John D. Herbert III and his wife Claire of Carlisle, Pa.; granddaughter, Angie Burgess of Towanda, Pa., grandsons, Pete Herbert of Yorkhaven, Pa., Howard Herbert of Tampa, Fla., great-granddaughters, Amber, Desrae, Lauren, Molly, Nevada and Hanna; great-grandson, John Rider; his sister, Joan Baer, of Rock Hill Furnace, Pa.; brother, Theodore Herbert of Scotia, Pa.; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by, his daughter, Claudia Ruth Nesbit; brothers, Raymond and Paul; sisters, Margaret and Catherine.
The funeral service will be held Thursday, Sept. 4, 2008 at 12 noon at the Maryott-Bowen Funeral Home, 217 York Ave., Towanda, Pa., with the Rev. Robert Martin, officiating.
The family will receive friends Thursday from 10 a.m. to 12 noon at the funeral home.
Interment will follow in Bradford County Memorial Park, Luthers Mills, Pa., with Towanda American Legion Post No. 42 according full military honors.
The family suggests that memorial contributions may be directed to the Bradford County Humane Society, P.O. Box 179, Ulster, Pa. 18850 in John D. Herbert Jr.'s memory. "
